The story of the simultaneous courtship of six grooms to merchant’s daughter Agafya Tikhonovna Kuperdyagina, who even in her own dreams and fantasies can’t find a husband-to-be, possessing the entire set of human merits, looks ridiculous at the stage of the Alexandrinsky Theatre, as if instilled by an evil spirit, or as an amusement ride. Valery Fokin reveals an acute conflict of a hero, striving to preserve inner peace, with the reality, which is acquiring preposterous, almost farcical countenance. And the farce, one of the crucial images of the performance, that was created by famous scenery designer Alexander Borovsky, stresses the active dynamics of the transitions from the world of inner fantasies of the main character, resting on a comfortable, almost “Oblomov’s” sofa, to the outer – hostile and unstable world, where the main character feels himself unconfident.
The performance, that had been staged in 2008, after summing up the results of the season became the winner of the Russian National theatrical prize the “Golden Mask” in the “Best Director” and “Best Designer” categories.
