“The Gamblers” is a comic play by Nikolai Gogol, which is deemed unfinished, however, nonetheless, is sought after by theatre directors around the world. The central issue of this story is the analysis of the psychology of a gambler. The director and the designer in the Andrey Mironov Theatre version deliberately disused playing cards. Thus, the game itself acquired visual solutions like those of Meyerhold, while the gambling table became a separate character, reflecting the plight of heroes, their ardour and secret desires, changing in regard of emotions. Moreover, even Ikharev’s special deck of cards literally comes to life, appearing at the stage as a woman, who is seen only by the creator.

What motivates a person, who is obsessed with an idea? Will the hero accept the new reality, while losing last illusions and faith in his own exceptionalism? Will he become the same cardsharp as those who surround him, or cease playing, put a bullet in his head?
